The Holy Post - May 08 [PDF]

This month we honor our Mothers, who, for most of us, were our first teachers. My mother placed the following anonymous poem above the kitchen sink at our house when I was growing up.

“Thank God for dirty dishes; they have a tale to tell.
While others may go hungry, we’re eating very well.
With home, and hearth and happiness, we shouldn’t want to fuss.
For by this stack of evidence, God’s been good to us.”

Mom also added a picture of a pioneer woman holding an iron pot over a fireplace, clearly cooking in a time and place without running water or electricity.  When we complained about having to scrub pots or wash dishes, Mom would make us read the poem and tell us to be grateful we had food to eat–one of the many lessons she taught us.

Others included:
1. Do the best you can with what you have
2. Work as hard as you can.
3. Don’t give up.
4. Help others, especially those who don’t have enough.

Good lessons for these tough times.  Thanks Mom.

Sam
