Dear Friends,
I remember looking up at the bumper. I was five years old and was walking home from kindergarten. I saw a friend across the street and darted across the street into the path of an oncoming car. I woke up looking up at the bumper.
It happened again this morning in Fort Lauderdale. According to miamiherald.com, Ja’ques Richardson darted out in front of a car at 7:45 AM (Tuesday, 3/25) He was crossing the street to Dillard Elementary School. He was rushed to Broward General Medical Center where he is in intensive care but suffered only minor injuries. He is expected to survive. Fortunately for Ja’ques and for me, we were struck by women who were obeying the traffic laws and were very attentive.
Sometimes that happens when we don’t see where we are and look where we are going. As individuals and as a congregation we must become more aware of where we are and where we are going. Our congregation has been engaged in ReFocus for several months. We have completed part of the first phase with a Focused Living Retreat. The retreat is designed for us to look at ourselves spiritually and ask ourselves where we have been and where we are going. Each of us comes up with our own personal calling statement, which works as a guide to lead us into the future. (We have scheduled another retreat for April 18-19.)
Soon we will move into phase two, in which we will look at where the church has been and where we think God wants us to go. To be honest, I don’t want to do all this extra work. However, I know the importance of seeing where you are and looking where you are going. Many churches have been run over by changes all around them, without looking up to see where they should be going. I invite you to join us on this journey of discovery. Also, join me in prayer that Ja’ques Richardson will be fine.
